Plans for 79th Liberation Day under way

The Committee for Education, Sport and Culture said extra activities have been put in place this year

Plans for Guernsey's 79th Liberation Day are under way with a mix of events due to be held.

Celebrated annually on 9 May, events have historically been held in St Peter Port.

But this year small grants have been available for Parish's to have the opportunity to host their own celebrations.

Deputy Sue Aldwell said: "We always aim to ensure there are a range of events and activities that can be enjoyed by all islanders, of all ages."

She added: "We are very much seeking to use this year as an opportunity to build momentum towards next year, which will be a huge event, like in previous years, as the island celebrates 80 years since our liberation."

The States has announced the school relay race, parade and church service will be taking place in St Peter Port.

The Calvacade is set to start from The Imperial Hotel and travel around the coast to St Peter port.

There will also be events held outside of the town.

St Pierre du Bois is hosting a celebration on L’Eree Common and the Vale is hosting a tea party.

The annual firework display is also due to take place but the fireworks will be taking to the skies from La Vallette this year.
