Three newborn puppies with umbilical cords still attached have been found dead in a shoebox in Newport.

The dogs were discovered near the entrance of a nature reserve at Renoir Road in Newport at about 11:00 BST on Friday.

The three puppies, of an unknown breed, were found by a member of the public wrapped in a blue jumper, prompting an RSPCA appeal for information.

Danielle Wilson from the charity said: “These three pups had their umbilical cords still attached, so they couldn’t have been that old at all.

“We don’t know whether they died during birth and someone just didn’t know what to do with the bodies, or they died afterwards."

She said the charity was making inquiries about CCTV in the area, and she had put up a poster where the puppies were found asking for information.

“Whatever has happened here, it is very sad that these pups have died and we’d like to thank the member of the public for looking out for them and sounding the alarm," she said.
