Inspectors produced a damning one-star report on their findings at Yum in Normanton Road

A Derby burger bar has been ordered to improve after a hygiene inspection found a dirty kitchen, with plumbing repairs attempted using a rubber glove and cable ties.

According to its website, Yum Burger in Normanton promises cuisine of the highest calibre “made with love" for an "unforgettable cheeseburger experience”.

But inspectors from Derby City Council found little to love when they went behind the scenes of the Normanton Road fast food joint in May.

Their one-star report said “major improvements” were needed - the restaurant says those changes have since been made.

A series of failings outlined in the report included dirt and debris around the kitchens and chillers, especially where the flooring was coming away from the wall, and on contact points such as door handles and switches.

One tap was found to have been repaired using a mouldy rubber glove and cable ties.

Inspectors wrote: "As this cannot be cleaned and sanitised, the tap must be repaired or be replaced."

Fridges, freezers, a sandwich press and a drinks machine were all dirty, inspectors said, while filters were missing from cooker canopies.

Walls needed to be cleaned and repainted, seals on a sink were mouldy and in need of replacement, while outside the step was broken and a build-up of grease was noted where staff had tried to pour it down a drain.

A fire alarm was hanging from the wall by exposed wires while a plug socket in the kitchen showed scorch marks.

Fridge temperatures were too high which could lead to bacteria growing or toxins forming in food, while the walk-in freezer was not working meaning food inside was defrosted.

Even after the visit of an engineer, fridges were not working properly on the inspector’s second visit.

The inspector's report, which was published by the city council following a Freedom of Information request, added: "I was disappointed that issues were still outstanding at my revisit and had not been addressed."

Yum Burger was asked by BBC News for a formal response to the inspection, but none was received.

But a member of staff at the restaurant said on the phone that the problems had been addressed.
