Several sleeping children and adults have escaped injury after an attempted arson at a house in Downpatrick.

Police said two males poured petrol over the front door of a house and a car and attempted to set them on fire in the Struell Avenue area of the town at about 03:45 BST on Saturday.

They left the scene in a vehicle prior to police arriving.

Detective Sergeant Emerson said: "Luckily, the fire had not spread and was extinguished by the resident of the property relatively quickly.

"However, there were a number of children and adults asleep in the property at the time this happened and it is very fortunate nobody was injured."

A short time after the men left the house, police received a report of a car on fire in the Saul Road area of Downpatrick, which is believed to be the vehicle the suspects left in.

The police are appealing for anyone with information or video footage to contact them.
