Plans to create an active travel path on Skye connecting the island's bridge with Broadford have taken a step forward.

The project has been awarded £104,500 from Highlands and Islands transport partnership Hitrans.

The grant will allow for design work to be carried out for the first phase of the route, spanning from Kyleakin to Breakish.

The Skye Cycle Way will allow people to walk, wheel or cycle from the Skye Bridge on sections of an old disused road, away from busy traffic.

Those behind the project said it could form the first section of a potential Skye-wide active travel network.

Neil Hope, chairman of Broadford and Strath Community Company, said: "At a time when our roads look set to get even busier due to planned infrastructure projects, creating a safe route for all is more important than ever."

The funding award has been welcomed by Skye and Raasay councillor John Finlayson, who praised the work of the community and partners in progressing plans.

Kate Forbes, MSP for Skye and Deputy First Minister, added that the route would make cycling safer and easier for local people, "and for everyone who visits this beautiful part of the island with their bike".
