Commuters were faced with delays on the M54 after a crash on the Birmingham-bound carriageway involving two cars earlier.
National Highways said a collision had taken place on the eastbound carriageway, between Junction 3 in Shropshire for Cosford, and Junction 2 in Staffordshire for Wolverhampton.
Emergency services and traffic officers were called to the crash, which happened at about 07:45 BST during the morning rush hour, amid warnings of 45-minute delays.
The two cars involved plus a third vehicle were moved on to the hard shoulder and all lanes reopened just after 09:00 BST.
A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: "As of 8am, the lane was blocked but road closures were handed to the Highways Agency whilst the recovery of vehicles was arranged."
She said there were no confirmed details of any injuries.
