Councillors have approved plans to ban dogs from a popular beach this summer.

Dog walkers have been able to use Minehead beach all year round after a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) expired in 2019.

But Somerset Council decided to enforce new restrictions during a meeting today.

Dogs will now be banned from a section of the beach, from Minehead Golf Club Groyne to the Jubilee café, from May to September.

However the council explained dog walkers will still be able to access the beach between the café and the Harbour area during the summer season.

Somerset Council said it carried out a consultation on the restrictions in August 2023 and had more than 530 responses.
