Double yellow lines to curb illegal village parking
- Published
A new set of double yellow lines will be introduced to a village to combat traffic flow and access problems.
The restrictions will be along parts of Ballfield Lane in Kexborough, near Barnsley, to prevent illegal parking during school drop-off and pick-up times, and will lead to a "safer and more reliable public transport service".
However local businesses said the measures would have a negative impact on custom because some on-street parking spaces would be lost.
Critics of Barnsley Council's plan also called the upcoming restrictions "excessive" because the issues only occur for "two short periods each day".
The council's traffic unit also found that both public service and emergency vehicles had been hindered by the current parking situation.
The yellow lines will be along Ballfield Lane and its junctions with Uplands Avenue, Cooper Road and Priestley Avenue.
The restrictions will also extend to Churchfield Lane.
The owners of the post office on Ballfield Lane also raised concerns about limited parking for elderly and disabled customers, since the Post Office was a "vital service" for surrounding villages.
A resolution of a limited waiting bay outside the post office, operational during school peak hours between 08:00 GMT to 17:00 GMT was reached, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
A council spokesperson added: "The provision of a limited waiting bay outside the post office was suggested to provide high turnover, short-term parking to assist customers."
