Cannabis plants worth £520,000 have been seized by police in a raid at a derelict property in Dumfries town centre.

Irish Street was closed to the public between Buccleuch Street and Friars Vennel at about 15:30 and officers remain at the scene.

Police Scotland said detectives executing a warrant seized a significant quantity of the plants after an "intelligence-led operation".

Cannabis plants worth about £300,000 were found in the same area about five years ago.

Det Insp Graeme Robertson, of Dumfries CID, said: “This is a substantial recovery and represents Police Scotland’s commitment to disrupting the cultivation and sale of illegal substances.

“Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“I would specifically ask anyone who has witnessed any suspicious behaviour in and around Irish Street, close to Buccleuch Street, in recent months to get in touch, external."
