A stretch of the A27 in East Sussex has reopened following a crash in which a man died.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash between Falmer and Lewes at about 03:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Police said the 24-year-old from Seaford, who was driving a grey BMW 320i, was declared dead at the scene.

Two other men, aged 24 and 19, were taken to hospital with serious and minor injuries respectively.

Police said the road had to be closed in both directions for several hours to allow for forensics and recovery.

“We only get one opportunity to do this, and we thank you for your patience and understanding,” a police spokesman said.

Brighton & Hove Buses said the crash and subsequent diversions had a “severe impact” on services 28, 29 and 29A as they had to divert via the A259 and A26 at Newhaven.

DFDS, which operates the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry service, also urged customers to check their journey times before travelling due to the crash.

The ferry company said the closure of the A27 caused increased waiting times on the A259.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.
