A new town in Worcestershire has been named after Wychavon District Council

The name of a proposed new town in Worcestershire has been confirmed as Wychavon.

The town, located around Worcestershire Parkway Railway Station, will initially be called Wychavon Town to avoid confusion with the district and the district council.

Wychavon District Council said the name was a "way of ensuring the district's identity continued" after a local government reorganisation.

From 2028, the district council will either be replaced by a unitary authority, or a rival counter-proposal to create two councils will take its place.

Plans for Wychavon Town feature a new town centre with retail, leisure and business opportunities.

There are also plans for four parks, primary schools in each neighbourhood, up to two new secondary schools, a sports hub and sports pitches, and a GP and healthcare centre.

Councillor Emma Kearsey, Wychavon's executive board member for planning, infrastructure and urban design, said: "Calling the town Wychavon will ensure the shared identity, heritage and strong sense of community that defines our district will be preserved for future generations."

Officers at Wychavon District Council are currently preparing an infrastructure planning application to be submitted by December 2026, which, once approved, will allow funding to be sought for key elements before major development starts.
