Swimmer, 20, forced under by waves, inquest hears

A 20-year-old swimmer who died after being rescued from the sea was pushed under water by forceful waves, an inquest has heard.

Mohamad Alkadour, from Wrexham, got into difficulty in the sea at about 18:00 BST on a Bank Holiday Monday in May off Barmouth beach in Gwynedd.

Caernarfon Coroner's Court heard the chef, who was born in Syria, had been visiting friends.

He was rescued after two hours in the water and emergency crews tried to revive him, before he was airlifted to hospital where he later died.

At the opening of the inquest into his death on Monday, coroner Kate Robertson said: "It seems some waves came across him with some force and forced him underneath."

She added that a post-mortem examination had taken place and the provisional cause of death was drowning.

The inquest was adjourned while further investigations take place.
