Coventry and District Walking Football Club said the new sessions followed rising interest in women's football

A women's walking football club has been started in what's thought to be a first for a city.

Coventry and District Walking Football Club have been holding sessions for men for a number of years but the club now puts on weekly sessions aimed at women aged over 35.

Walking football is a slower-paced version of the game and was growing in popularity, said organisers.

There were numerous groups and clubs in Coventry although none cater solely for women which made the new session unique in the city, they claimed.

Club secretary Alwyn Day said there had been huge interest in women's football following the success of the Lionesses, especially at Euro 2022.

“This is an opportunity to join like-minded women to play walking football in a well-organised and established club with excellent facilities," he said.

"There is also a great social side to the club."

The sessions are held at the city's Alan Higgs Centre on Wednesdays at 18:00.
