A man has been arrested after a Barclays bank branch was attacked and had its front windows smashed and counters damaged.
Cambridgeshire Police officers were called to Cathedral Square in Peterborough city centre at 06:30 GMT after reports of vandalism.
A 42-year-old man from the city has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon and burglary.
He remained in custody while the investigation continued.
An eyewitness said the site had been cordoned off with a “large police presence”.
The bank remained closed as a "precautionary measure", Barclays said.
It has sent out a message to customers apologizing for the inconvenience and advising them to use the Barclays branch on Fleet Way in Fletton.
