A section of the M2 is set to be closed for a full weekend.

National Highways said it needed to shut the road to continue essential repair work to the Merrals Shaw interchange bridge.

The London-bound carriageway at junction 2 near Rochester will be closed for one full weekend and five further nights.

A National Highways spokesperson said the work was "critical" for maintenance and safety.

Maintenance work began on 17 May and more closures are scheduled.

A full weekend closure will run from 31 May at 21:00 BST to 3 June at 06:00.

The road will also be closed overnight from 21:00 to 06:00 from 3 June for five nights.

National Highways said it would repair the bridge, replace expansion joints, resurface and waterproof the bridge.

The spokesperson said: "Drivers should allow extra time during their journeys and follow the official diversion route signposted."
