A waterpark will reopen next week after a "superhuman effort" since its previous owners went into administration.

Alpamare in Scarborough closed in December but has now been taken over by new operator Flamingo Land.

Together with North Yorkshire Council, Flamingo Land CEO Gordon Gibb said a significant amount of work had gone into getting the site ready for the summer season.

The waterpark will open to the public on 24 July at 10:00 BST.

'Permanent solution'

The council's deputy leader, Gareth Dadd, said: "I am delighted that we have managed to get this attraction back open in time for the busy school holidays.

"It is a massive asset for the town and securing Flamingo Land as the operator is key to its success."

The attraction, which overlooks North Bay, features a wave pool, a splash and play pool, four slides, two outdoor pools and a café.

Flamingo Land said the spa and treatment area would open at a later date.

The new operator has taken on a short-term lease until November and work would now begin to find a "permanent solution" to its future, the council confirmed.

Its commercial performance will be reviewed for the rest of the year and the council has not ruled out subsiding the waterpark in the longer term.

The attraction opened in 2016, but last year had to be taken over by the authority after owners Benchmark Leisure Ltd collapsed.

The company still owed millions of pounds in repayments from a loan given to them by the former Scarborough Council.
