An Australian tourist was killed in a hit-and-run as she crossed the road following a coach trip to London, a coroner said.

Yvonne Jones, 85, was with her 90-year-old sister when the collision took place in Benfleet, Essex, on 7 December.

The pair had been dropped off by a coach moments before Ms Jones was fatally struck by a Jaguar at 23:30 GMT, Essex coroner's court was told.

Area coroner Michelle Brown suspended an inquest into her death on Friday so Essex Police could continue its investigation.

The force arrested a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released him under investigation.

Ms Jones travelled from Queensland, Australia, to visit her sister, a brief inquest opening heard on Friday.

The siblings were dropped off outside the Bread and Cheese pub following their day out to London.

"As [Ms Jones] began to cross the road, she was struck by a vehicle that then failed to stop at the scene," Ms Brown added.

She said efforts were made to resuscitate Ms Jones roadside but she was pronounced dead at 00:28.

The coroner said Ms Jones' provisional cause of death was brain stem transection, but that she was awaiting the outcome of histology and toxicology reports.

'Deeply saddened'

Police have continued to appeal for witnesses to the incident, which involved a saloon-style Jaguar.

Paying tribute to Ms Jones last month, her family said they would miss her "cheeky humour" and kindness.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Yvonne Jones, our Mum, Nan, Great Nan, Sister and Aunty," a statement read.

"Australia has been Mum's home for over 50 years with her children, Lee, Julie, Debbie and Tracy and their extended families and will be her final resting place."
