A man remains in a critical condition nearly 36 hours after he was shot by armed police officers in a Surrey village.

Police were called to reports of an altercation between two people, one of whom had a weapon, in Nursery Road, Knaphill, at 00:36 BST on Sunday.

A man in his 20s was shot by armed police at the scene, Surrey Police confirmed. He was taken to hospital in a critical yet stable condition.

The force said at midday on Monday that the man remains in hospital and that no arrests had been made.

Both people involved in the altercation were known to each other, officers said. Police said they recovered a weapon from the scene.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the shooting. This is standard procedure whenever armed officers use their guns.

Surrey Police Federation said it would be supporting the officers involved.
