Southern Water has apologised after a council leader said it had “botched” repairs to a zebra crossing.

A section of road including the crossing in Vernon Terrace, in Brighton, was dug up by the company while work to repair a leaking pipe was carried out.

Bella Sankey, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said the utility had been asked to "sort it out", while deputy leader Jacob Taylor said the repair job looked “absolutely awful”.

Southern Water said: “We’re sorry our reinstatement work of the road including the zebra crossing at Vernon Terrace was not to the standard our customers and stakeholders rightly expect of us."

A portion of the road was closed for several days while work was carried out.

Ms Sankey said it was “disappointing that Southern Water have done this botch job after digging up the road”.

Mr Taylor said it was hoped Southern Water "can rectify it as soon as possible.”

He added: “Southern Water had been working on the road to repair a leak and while technically it is only responsible for repainting the area it had to dig up, clearly this looks absolutely awful.

“We are working incredibly hard to improve the look and feel of the city and expect others working on our roads to share our commitment."

Southern Water said: “We will be investigating how this has happened and rectifying this issue as soon as we can.”
