An investigation has been launched after a woman reported she was racially abused and assaulted by a group of teenagers.

The alleged incident happened in Blackburn Road, Herne Bay, at about 13:50 BST on Tuesday.

The woman, who is in her 70s, said she was approached by three or four teenage boys and had liquid squirted at her from a bottle.

Kent Police confirmed the substance was not corrosive.

The force added that the woman said she was also racially abused before the suspects ran from the scene.

She was taken to a local hospital for medical attention and has since been discharged.

The suspects, one of whom had a skateboard, were described as white and aged between 14 and 15.

Officers said they have been carrying out inquiries at the Greenhill area and no arrests have been made yet.

Det Ch Insp Keith Taylor said: "Incidents like these are very rare but we do not underestimate the impact it can have on a community.

"As a result, an increased police presence will be seen in the area as we continue our investigation."
