A new maritime-themed exhibition showcasing the work of young people in Hull is to go on display at Ferens Art Gallery.

The Waves of Wonder exhibition will feature the work of students from eight local secondary schools, including paintings, sculptures and creative writing.

It opens on 19 October and runs until 26 January 2025.

Kristopher McKie, community curator for the exhibition, said it would be a celebration of "Hull’s rich maritime history".

'Sense of pride'

The exhibition is part of Hull Maritime’s Young Maritime Creatives project, which launched in May 2023.

As well as producing their own themed artwork, students have visited heritage sites and met with maritime communities to learn about their experiences, organisers said.

Mr McKie said: “It’s been an absolute delight to work alongside the young people involved and to witness the breadth of their creativity."

He said the exhibition would "encourage us all to think about how our connection with the sea inspires our creativity".

Anouk de Bokx, head of creative at Boulevard Academy, one of the schools involved, said it had been an amazing experience for the students.

"Exploring our maritime history and creating work collaboratively has given students a sense of pride in our heritage and community," she added.
