A man has suffered a serious head injury during an assault near a pub in Sheffield, according to police.

The attack took place at about 20:35 BST on Saturday close to The Sherwood pub on Birley Moor Road, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

The man, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Officers have urged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the police.
