Trains cancelled as engineering works overrun

Trains have been cancelled due to overrunning engineering works.

Northern train services between Darlington and Bishop Auckland have been called off all day with rail replacement buses put in place.

The train company apologised for the disruption saying all lines were blocked "due to engineering works not being finished on time".

Network Rail said it planned to reopen the line for the first scheduled service on Tuesday morning.

It said "unforeseen difficulties" meant the testing phase of an essential resignalling scheme near Shildon had taken longer than expected.

Train services are unable to run between Darlington and Bishop Auckland in both directions.

Stations affected include Shildon, Newton Aycliffe, Heighington and North Road.

Rail replacement services would run throughout the day, Northern said.

Services between Darlington and Middlesbrough/Saltburn have not been affected.
