A medical student died after falling more than 500ft (152m) while climbing Yr Wyddfa during bad weather, an inquest heard.

John Aravinth, 20, was walking up Wales' highest peak along the Llanberis Path with his family in May 2024, before they turned back because of the bad weather.

An inquest in Caernarfon was told that Mr Aravinth, from West Sussex, continued on the path and was confident he could reach the summit alone, but hours later called his father to say he was lost.

He was "distressed" while calling 999 twice asking for a mountain rescue service, and the police did not receive an answer when trying to contact him, the coroner's court heard.

Llanberis mountain rescue team reported he had fallen more than 150m from Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, and that more than 35 rescuers were involved in an 18-hour mission in "serious and dangerous" weather.

Kate Robertson, senior coroner for north-west Wales, said: "It is likely that he fell as a result of the strong winds, or that he slipped in the dangerous weather conditions."

Mr Aravinth, a medical student at University of Edinburgh, suffered a head injury in the fall.

Ms Robertson concluded his death was an accident.
