A disability influencer said visiting Liverpool's Christmas market is a "nightmare" for wheelchair users as the cobblestones are uneven and difficult to navigate.

Lisa McCann, 44, said the uneven paving of the market on St George's Plateau and William Brown Street made her wheelchair shake, leaving her in pain.

She said: "It is not even good for people who are unsteady on their feet. It was not an enjoyable experience."

Liverpool City Council said it has worked with accessibility advisors over the years and was "committed" to making it open to everyone.

Ms McCann, who lives in Liverpool, said she visited the market at the end of last month and posted about her experience on TikTok.

She said: "They put all the stalls on the smooth pavements so the only access is over the cobbled stones.

"It was a nightmare to get over as they are all uneven."

"Your wheelchair shakes which causes you pain, which is no good.

"Normally I would avoid the Christmas markets at all costs, but I had to go for work reasons."

A council spokesperson said: "Liverpool City Council and the organisers of the Liverpool Christmas Market are committed to ensuring that, so far as reasonably practicable, it is accessible to everyone.

"It is hugely popular, welcoming more than half a million visitors each year.

"The plateau is cobbled, and we know this can be challenging to some.

"We have worked extensively with accessibility advisors over the last few years to explore appropriate options to cover the cobbles and make the area level, without compromising their Grade I listed status."
