A city centre library is set to undergo a £1m transformation to mark 25 years since it opened its doors.

Located in The Forum, the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library was opened in 2001, after the former Norwich Central Library was destroyed in a fire.

The proposed designs, shaped by library users, included improved lighting, new furniture and spaces for events and talks.

Margaret Dewsbury, Conservative councillor and cabinet member for communities and partnerships, said: "This milestone refurbishment is a celebration of the library's legacy and a commitment to its future."

The new library was opened after 150 firefighters tackled a blaze at the former library in the city.

Thousands of historical documents and more than 100,000 books were destroyed.

Plans for the refurbishment were shaped by library users' feedback and would see changes to the early years and children's areas, and more study spaces

As part of the refurbishment plans, a redesigned early years library will be created with new spaces for children and teenage readers.

There will also be more study areas on the first floor.

Feedback has also highlighted the need for improved accessibility. Lower shelving units will be built, and improved signage and wayfinding will be implemented.

Dewsbury said the council was proud to be investing in the community building.

She said: "It ensures that the Millennium Library remains an important space for learning, creativity and community connection.

"It is a fantastic way to celebrate 25 years of the Millennium Library. It's a space that means so much to so many, and these improvements will ensure it continues to be welcoming to everyone who walks through its doors."

Proposed designs will be on display at the entrance of the library from 27 October to 3 November.

Norfolk County Council said work was scheduled to begin next year and there would be some disruption to services.
