A teenage boy is in hospital with "potentially life-changing injuries" following an assault, police say.

The incident happened in Priorswood Place in Taunton, Somerset, at about 17:50 GMT on Monday, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The force said a boy in his mid-teens and an 18-year-old man remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

Neighbourhood Insp Steve Jones said the teenager in hospital was in a stable condition. He appealed for anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage of the incident, or the moments before or after it, to come forward.

He added: "We want to assure residents that while this is a distressing incident, those involved are known to each other and we do not expect there to be any wider threat to the public.

"A thorough investigation is now being carried out, and we will be visiting schools as part of our intervention work offering advice and reassurance that these types of incidents fortunately remain rare in Somerset."

Neighbourhood officers will also be conducting high-visibility reassurance patrols in the area, he said.
