Man arrested after pedestrian, 44, killed in crash

A pedestrian died in the collision in the early hours, police said

A man has been arrested after a pedestrian was killed in a crash in West Sussex.

The pedestrian died at the scene of the collision in Cowfold, shortly after 01:00 BST on Saturday.

Sussex Police said a London man, aged 31, was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and causing death by careless driving and remained in custody.

Officers said the incident involved a grey Mercedes on the A272 Bolney Road.

A police spokesman said: “Despite the best efforts of police, paramedics and the public, who commenced CPR, the victim – a 44-year-old man from West Chiltington – was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The man who died has not yet been named.

Police said his next-of-kin had been informed and were being supported.
