A mobility scooter user had to be rescued from the sea in the early hours of the morning after falling from their vehicle over the side of an esplanade, the RNLI has said.

A lifeboat and RNLI shore crew were dispatched to Redcar seafront near the Stray Cafe at about 04:00 GMT on 7 November, a spokesman said.

Another person was found waist deep in the water trying to help and the RNLI assisted both people back to the shore.

Redcar RNLI operations manager Mick Picknett said the crew "undoubtedly saved a life in what was a very unfortunate accident".

The volunteer crew administered first aid until the ambulance service arrived.

"Our volunteers train constantly to be ready to respond to all types of incident and their actions were exemplary," Mr Picknett said.

A North East Ambulance spokesperson said one patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and another was treated and discharged at the scene.
