Rail travellers are being warned of widespread disruption on train services after engineering works overran, followed by a points failure in a separate location.

A problem with a set of points between Branksome and Bournemouth has meant train cancellations and delays between Weymouth and Basingstoke on the South West main line.

Trains are expected to be cancelled, delayed by up to 40 minutes or revised until at least 16:00 GMT.

Earlier, lines were unable to reopen until about 07:00 after engineering work between Eastleigh and Basingstoke was not completed on time.

Routes affected:

  • CrossCountry between Manchester Piccadilly / Nottingham / Birmingham New Street and Bournemouth, and also between Manchester Piccadilly and Southampton Central

  • South Western Railway between Winchester and Portsmouth Harbour / Bournemouth / Poole, and also between London Waterloo and Southampton Central / Portsmouth Harbour / Bournemouth / Weymouth
