The A18 Mountain Road has reopened after being closed late on Tuesday night

A major route linking the Isle of Man's capital with the north has reopened following snow and sheet ice earlier this week.

The A18 Mountain Road was closed from the Bungalow to Creg ny Baa late on Tuesday night amid wintry conditions.

While the road had been reopened, the Isle of Man Constabulary urged drivers to "take care as weather conditions are predicted to deteriorate later tonight".

The island faced a number of yellow weather warnings throughout the week for snow, ice, hail and sleet, with the latest issued for heavy rain and gale force winds.

Although the Department of Infrastructure had treated the Mountain Road with gritters on Thursday in an attempt to open it, further wintry showers during the afternoon had "undone the work undertaken".

A series of closures of the route during December and over the Easter period have been planned to allow the department to carry out surveying, resurfacing and drainage works.
