A child rapist who showed his victim pornography and got them to "copy" what they had seen has been jailed for 14 years.

Kenneth Dick "normalised" sexual abuse for his young victim, Judge Sarah Mallett said at Newcastle Crown Court.

His actions would have a "long-lasting effect" on the child, the judge added.

Dick, 66, from Dunston, Gateshead, had denied any wrongdoing but was found guilty of offences including raping a child and forcing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Dick, of Ryde Terrace, made his victim watch pornographic videos and then told them to "copy what [they were] seeing," Judge Mallett said, adding they were "instructed what to do".

'Praise brave victim'

"You normalised your behaviour by showing [them] the pornography," the judge added.

She said there was "no doubt" Dick's actions would have a "long-lasting effect" on the child's ability to build relationships and develop psychologically.

As he was an "offender of particular concern", Dick will also have to serve an extra year on extended licence when he is released from prison.

He must also sign the sex offenders' register for life and abide by a sexual harm prevention order limiting his contact with with children.

Speaking after the sentencing, Det Con Claire Ashurst of Northumbria Police praised the victim for reporting Dick.

"It is thanks to their bravery in disclosing what happened to police that a dangerous offender like Dick is now behind bars and will be unable to harm anyone else," she said.
