Man charged with murder of 80-year-old is remanded in custody

A man charged with the murder of an 80-year-old who died at a retirement complex has been remanded in custody.

Jonathan Moore, 63, of Welland Court, Cheltenham, appeared before Gloucestershire Magistrates' Court, accused of murdering Henry Mayo.

The court heard Mr Mayo died on the evening of 14 April at Welland Court.

Mr Moore will appear before Bristol Crown Court on 19 April.

Cathy Thornton, prosecuting, asked for the defendant to be remanded into custody as the court had no power to grant bail in murder cases.

Presiding Justice Andrew Tabor told him: "You are being sent to the crown court at Bristol for the offence of murder. You will attend there for a preliminary hearing on 19 April.

"You will be remanded into custody until then."

Previously, Gloucestershire Police said Mr Mayo was found to have sustained fatal wounds, external and was declared dead at the scene.

Welland Court is described as a 'retirement housing estate' with bungalows and flats purpose-built for people over the age of 60.
