More traffic disruptions expected at Tyne Bridge
- Published
More disruption can be expected at the Tyne Bridge in the coming weeks as part of major restoration works.
Scaffolding will begin to be put on the Newcastle side of the bridge on 5 August as part of the £41m project.
There will be several temporary traffic measures including a one-way restriction heading northbound on Lombard Street until spring 2026.
Labour councillor Marion Williams said Newcastle City Council was trying to keep journey disruption to a "minimum".
Other traffic measures include temporary traffic lights on the Quayside at the junction with Sandhill to Kings Street, which will be in place until early September.
There will also be some temporary lane closures, according to council.
Closures are also expected between Sandhill and Broadchare on the Quayside between 20:00 BST and 06:00 BST from 9 to 20 September.
The scaffolding will allow workers to access the steelwork and underside of the bridge so that it can be repaired and repainted.
The council also said the scaffolding is being put up outside kittiwake breeding season and will incorporate specialist ledges which the birds can access and use to nest in when they return to the Tyne in 2025.
The works are expected to be complete in summer 2028.
