The disorder broke out at the Walshes Meadow stadium

Football bosses have hailed a highly-anticipated match a success despite play being disrupted by disorder among fans in the stadium.

Police have launched an investigation after trouble flared inside and outside Stourport Swifts FC's stadium during their losing FA Vase fixture against Worcester City FC.

Commentators reported bottles of beer and water being thrown onto the pitch with "people being shoved around".

An investigation was launched but no arrests have been made, West Mercia Police said.

'Record crowd'

City went on to secure a 5-1 win and a place in the quarter finals during the match watched by more than 1,900 people in the Walshes Meadow stadium on Saturday.

Ian Johnson, a Swifts spokesperson, said the trouble had been "unfortunate", but it did need to be kept in perspective.

He said: "The day itself was a fantastic success. We had a little bit of trouble towards the end, but they sorted it very quickly.

"A record crowd, 1,903 is the official attendance, which is way above the previous record against Hereford five years ago."

Insp Lisa Hornberger added: "We worked closely with Stourport Swifts FC to ensure that the vast majority of home, and away fans, had a safe and enjoyable experience, but unfortunately a minority spoiled that for the majority of fans who attended."
