A film festival co-founder has said he wants to encourage people to "take pride" in Wolverhampton's arts scene.

The Wolverhampton Film Festival was set up in 2021 by filmmakers Arun Kapur and Gurjant Singh with the aim of championing the city.

Aspiring and established filmmakers submit a range of short films, documentaries, animations, music videos and micro shorts to a panel of judges who then select which ones will be broadcasted at the event.

It is taking place at the University of Wolverhampton’s screen school from 3 to 5 May.

“We did it to bring life to Wolverhampton because in the past it has not had the respect it deserves, we’re proud to say we’re from Wolverhampton,” said Mr Kapur.

The filmmaker and poet added: “We want people to know there are things going on in Wolverhampton in the medium, and to take pride in the city’s arts and culture scene.

“It is important to us to be able to create a level playing field for all filmmakers and provide a space where you can be in the same room, whether you’re just starting out or fully established."

Gurjant Singh said: "To me, Wolverhampton is at the very essence of everything I stand for.

"The aim is to have more filmmakers from Wolverhampton and to turn Wolverhampton into a main filming city"
