The number of children born in Jersey last year was the lowest it has been for almost 70 years, according to new figures.

The statistics from the Superintendent Registrar showed there were 795 births in 2023.

It is the lowest amount of births in a year since 1955, the registrar said.

It was also a decrease on the 835 babies born in 2022.

According to the figures, most babies born in 2023 were born at the hospital, although St Peter and St Martin were the only parishes to record no births at all.

The registrar said the most most popular baby name for boys was Oliver, while Olivia was once again the most popular name for girls.

Superintendent Registrar Claire Follain said: "This latest report provides useful insight into key life events across our Island in 2023 which show that Jersey is experiencing similar social and lifestyle patterns to the other Channel Islands and the United Kingdom.”
