A plaque and marker stone has been unveiled at the site of a former school in Stoke-on-Trent.

St Peter’s High School in Penkhull was merged with Berry Hill High School to form St Peter’s Academy in 2011 and operated across two sites before it moved to its current location in Fenton in 2013.

The Penkhull site is now home to a development of 60 new houses.

A road running through the estate was named St Peter’s Way to recognise its previous use.

Former head teacher Don Titley, who retired after more than 20 years at the school, attended the unveiling and said it was an emotional moment.

“I came as head of the French department in 1969 and I left in 1996, having worked my way through to be head,” he said.

“It was very special. I think I was very lucky to be the head of a school like this at that time.”

Ex-councillor and former St Peter’s pupil, Dean Richardson, said: “The former school played such an important part in so many people's lives."

He organised for the road to be named in its honour and for the plaque at the site.

“I wanted to ensure that the redevelopment of the site for housing included something to mark the history of the former school,” he added.
