A man has died and a woman has been arrested after a crash on a main road in a town.

A 61-year-old pedestrian suffered serious injuries when they were hit by a BMW on Nantwich Road, Crewe, on Friday, Cheshire Police said.

He was treated by paramedics but later died in hospital.

A 38-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remained in custody, the force added.

Officers on patrol in Crewe came across the crash which involved a green BMW, shortly after 10:00 GMT.

Nantwich Road was closed in both directions between Broughton Lane and Manor Way but had since reopened.

"This incident occurred on a busy stretch of road during the day," said Sgt Andrew Dennison.

"We would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed what happened."
