AI could be used in public sector - chief minister

Deputy Lyndon Farnham said a review will look at how AI could be used across government departments

Artificial intelligence (AI) will be considered to improve public services across government departments, Jersey's chief minister has said.

Deputy Lyndon Farnham confirmed the potential change in response to questions submitted by Deputy Max Andrews of St Helier North.

Mr Farnham said a full review of how AI could be used safely, securely and ethically was needed.

He said the review would identify whether AI could help make departments more efficient.

'Opportunities'

Mr Farnham said: "Before AI technology is implemented, it is essential to adopt a framework and a supporting policy that will ensure secure, ethical and responsible rollout.

"This will enable departments to identify appropriate opportunities to deploy AI and realise associated efficiencies in future."

Mr Farnham said an AI framework and policy were being developed and, subject to ministerial approval, could be ready in 2025.
