Woman suffers 'life-changing' injuries in crash

A woman has suffered potentially life-changing injuries after a car crashed into a bus shelter.

Officers from Essex Police were called to Avon Way, Colchester, at about 19:45 BST on Wednesday.

The collision involved two cars and happened near the junction with Hewes Close, the force said.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit and possession of a controlled substance.

He was held in police custody, while the injured woman continued to receive treatment for her injuries in hospital.

"These are being treated as potentially life-changing," a police spokesman said.

The East of England Ambulance Service said it requested support from the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance during the incident.

It also sent multiple response vehicles to the scene when it was called at 19:44.
