Council officials said the development would harm the character of the countryside

Plans to build 95 homes on green wedge land next to a Leicestershire village have been rejected.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has refused developers Redrow Homes, planning permission for the houses on agricultural land next to The Common in Barwell.

Planning officers said the scheme would be an "unsustainable" development in designated countryside.

The developer has the right to appeal against the decision.

In a report, the council said the site was part of the Hinckley, Barwell, Earl Shilton and Burbage green wedge and the homes would have a harmful effect on the area's beauty and undeveloped rural character.

The council said developers had also not demonstrated the homes would not cause a "severe cumulative" traffic impact on nearby roads.

The refusal follows the rejection of plans for 185 homes on the site in 2017, and again in 2018, as well as proposals for 110 homes in 2023.
