An 88-year-old woman has been killed in crash between a car and a van in Ayrshire.

She was a passenger in a Ford Mondeo that collided with a white Ford Transit van on the A737 at Dalgarven, near Kilwinning.

Emergency services attended the incident at 15:50 on Tuesday but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 60-year-old man driving the car and the 37-year-old man driving the van were taken to hospital for treatment.

The road was closed for almost eight hours to allow officers to carry out investigation work.

Road Policing officers are appealing for information about the crash, external.

Sgt Brian Simpson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died in this incident.

“Our inquiries are ongoing and I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash and who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch."
