Author Dame Jacqueline Wilson has been confirmed as a judge for the BBC award scheme honouring community champions.

The BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Surrey Make a Difference Awards celebrate local heroes who help improve their community.

BBC journalist Julia Moore, who organises the awards, said she was "ecstatic that Jacqueline Wilson is one of our judges".

EastEnders star Heather Peace has also been announced as a judge for the awards.

Nominations for the awards close at 11:00 GMT Sunday.

Dame Wilson has written more than 100 children's books, including The Story of Tracy Beaker.

Ms Moore called the author a "local legend" who was "loved and admired by so many".

Dame Wilson and Ms Peace will judge the 2024 Make a Difference Awards, which will see local heroes and animals nominated across eight categories.

The awards include: Volunteer, Community, Fundraiser, Carer, Great Neighbour, Bravery, the Green Award and the Animal Award.

Winners will be announced at the Make a Difference Award ceremonies hosted around the county in September.
