A new leader has been chosen at Tamworth Borough Council.

Tory councillor Thomas Jay won the support of the Conservative group as well as independent councillors to replace Paul Turner who resigned recently.

He also announced previous council leader Jeremy Oates would be responsible for delivery of projects being paid for by the Future High Streets Fund, external.

Mr Jay said it was an honour to lead the local authority.

"I do not take the position lightly, I’m coming into this with my eyes wide open. I understand the challenges this role brings and the effort required and I am more than ready for that," he said.

"My plan as a leader can be described in simple terms, in a nutshell, as one that brings people together, taps into existing talent and experience and which focuses purely on delivery for Tamwoth and its residents."
