Brighton & Hove City Council says it will have a £33m budget deficit in the next financial year

The deputy leader of Brighton & Hove City Council has described the financial settlement offered by the government as "deeply disappointing".

Also, East Sussex County Council said the award means it is "almost impossible" to see how it is going to continue to provide "decent and effective services".

On Monday, Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove announced local authorities in England would receive £64bn in 2024/25, which he said was a 6.5% increase on the previous year.

The government said it would work alongside councils to provide "quality" services.

Brighton & Hove City Council said the settlement will add £2m to its budget deficit in the next financial year.

In early December, the council's leader Bella Sankey said the Labour-run authority was facing a £31m deficit.

After Mr Gove's announcement, deputy leader Jacob Taylor said: “The council is now left with a funding gap of £33 million for next year’s budget."

East Sussex County Council, where the Conservatives lead a minority administration, has predicted a shortfall of £27.5m for the next financial year.

A spokesperson said: “Despite being a very well run council, this settlement is simply not enough to close our funding gap.

“It is almost impossible to see how the decent and effective services our residents need and deserve could be provided.”

Local Government minister Simon Hoare said: "We will continue to work alongside councils to ensure quality and reliable services are provided, while also keeping a weather eye on ensuring value for the taxpayer."
