A man has died following a hit-and-run crash in Sheffield, police said.

Officers were called to Gleadless Road at about 20:30 BST yesterday and found a man in his 40s who was thought to have been involved in a collision.

Despite efforts from medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The force believe a dark-coloured Volkswagen that did not stop at the scene was involved and said they were "working at pace" to understand the circumstances.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area last night but Gleadless Road and Ridgeway Road have since reopened, with trams back running.

Police appealed for information on cars acting suspiciously in the area at the time and asked the public to get in touch if they saw a damaged car.
