Pedestrian seriously hurt after being hit by car

A pedestrian has been injured after he was hit by a car in a North Yorkshire market town.

Police said the incident happened on Bridge Street, Market Place, in Helmsley, at about 12:30 GMT and involved a black Skoda Yeti.

The pedestrian, an 82-year-old man, was taken to hospital and remains in a serious condition, police said.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said the driver, a local man, aged 81, was assisting officers with the investigation.

"We are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, anyone who may have seen the vehicle or pedestrian prior to the collision, or anyone with relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage, to contact us," they added.

The road was closed following the incident but has since reopened.
