Arrest over reports of man with gun near school

A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence, after reports of a gun being seen near a school.

Eskdale Academy in Hartlepool went into lockdown on Monday at 08:55 GMT when a man was seen pointing what appeared to be an air rifle into the sky nearby. Armed police were deployed to the scene as children were arriving at school.

Cleveland Police said a 30-year-old man, who is in custody for questioning, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs.

Police are asking anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact them.

Detectives said their investigation was continuing.
