A road in South Lanarkshire which was closed due to a gas leak will reopen later on Tuesday.

The A726 has been closed between Chapelton and Coldstream Road in Strathaven after the leak was reported at about 15:00 on Monday.

Police had warned the road was likely to be closed for some time and local diversions were in place.

Gas supplier SGN said it was working "around the clock" to fix the leak, adding that once the road was reopened a three-way traffic lights system would be in operation.

Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for the gas distribution company said: "We have now completed emergency repairs to our gas network on the A726 at Strathaven.

"All going well, we'll be able to reopen the road with two-way temporary traffic lights in place late afternoon today."

The temporary traffic lights will remain in place until Thursday.
